About BuildRank

What BuildRank is, which home improvement trades it covers across the UK, where its limits lie and who pays for it.

Most households hire a roofer, a kitchen fitter or an extension builder only a few times, and the bill is often one of the largest they pay outside the mortgage. The trade is made up mostly of small firms, many of them a handful of people working across a county, so from the outside it is hard to tell who does what. BuildRank groups the home improvement companies of UK towns and cities by the job, so you can see which of them do your kind of work as their everyday trade before you start asking for quotes.

What the lists cover

There are lists of double glazing companies, conservatory builders, roofers, driveway companies, loft conversion specialists, house extension builders, kitchen fitters, bathroom fitters and landscape gardeners, one for each trade in each town where enough companies do that work. Resin driveway installers get separate town pages. Within a list, buttons keep only the companies that fit composite doors, bifold doors or sash windows, build orangeries, or work on flat roofs, fascias and soffits. Each company has its own page setting out the jobs it does, the town it works from, when it opens and the ways to get in touch.

Four nations, four sets of rules

The lists cover towns and cities across the whole of the UK, from London, Birmingham and Bristol to Glasgow, Cardiff and Belfast, and new towns are added as each list is ready. The rules are not the same everywhere. England and Wales each have their own Building Regulations, Scotland works with building warrants issued by the council, and in Northern Ireland building control is run by the district councils under their own regulations. Where an answer depends on the nation, our pages say so.

What we do not do

BuildRank is not a builder or an installer. We carry out no work, write no quotes and survey no homes. Whether a wall is load-bearing, what a job ought to cost or which company to choose are questions for the professionals you hire, not for us. Nobody books visits through us, and readers pay us nothing. We do not look up every company’s scheme membership, insurance or guarantees ourselves, but the How we select page shows where you can. Any contract you sign is between you and the company.

Who pays for the site

Reading BuildRank costs nothing and there are no adverts on it. Its costs are covered by two optional plans, open only to companies already selected for a list. Pro adds contact details, a before-and-after gallery of projects, the areas a company covers, its schemes, guarantees and payment options. Top puts a company among the first three places of a list. Both are marked as such on every page, neither can buy a company onto a list, and we take no share of what you pay for any job.
